Description
“Between being loved and being feared, I have always believed Machiavelli was right. If nobody is afraid of me, I’m meaningless.” - Lee Kuan Yew

Can you really know someone through the stories that are told of him?

Sparked by the mixed emotions expressed by Singaporeans and non-Singaporeans about the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, Sam Lo/SKL0 was inspired to create a body of work to reflect on the gamut of anecdotes and sentiments that arose after his death.

Through these reflections, the artist explores the underlying currents of Singapore’s sociopolitical climate. Examining the intrigue that surrounds the myth of “The Man”, Sam Lo/SKL0 delves past general, preconceived notions of Mr Lee. In creating works that investigate into the notions which stem from Mr Lee’s public and political activities, Sam Lo/SKL0 unravels the layered and complex nature of public perceptions.

Spanning the last three years of Mr Lee’s life, this exhibition is a tribute to his legacy, a form of remembrance of his life, and serves as a documentation of the public’s perception of him. For Sam Lo/SKL0, The LIMPEH Show acts as a closure, as the final chapter to the ‘Sticker Lady’ saga, and signalling a new beginning for the artist.

ARTWORK DESCRIPTIONS

LIMPEH – #1 in the series
2012
Acrylic on canvas

The authoritarian, the founding father, the Man.
*LIMPEH (lim-peh): Of the Hokkien dialect, directly translates to “your father” and a colloquial way of saying “yours truly” as if to assert one’s authority.

POWER – #2 in the series (Edition 2)
2015 (original: 2012)
Mixed media collage and acrylic on canvas

He ruled with an iron fist, he fought for a vision. The plan had to work. Gather votes, retain power, keep power, hold on to power. You may critic all you want, but know that you do not control it.

MONEY – #3 in the series (Edition 2)
2015 (original: 2012)
Mixed media collage and acrylic on canvas

“Pay and pay some more”, they say. Together with the increase in standards of living came rising living costs. As the struggle to stay afloat becomes a daily affair, we lament at the increase in the price of fishball noodles and high salaries.

SURVEILLANCE – #4 in the series
2012
Mixed media collage, glow in the dark paint and acrylic on canvas

The walls and their ears, the sky with their eyes; the sidewalks fill themselves with calculated moves and side glances. Self-inflicted, possibly, this circulatory system of self-regulation, working just like clockwork.

PROGRESS – #5 in the series
2013
Mixed media collage and spray paint on canvas

Taking over public spaces and remaking them into something that you’d deem beautiful- looks like we are not that different, more than you’d like to feel. So I tag your name in spray paint on my work, like how I tagged mine on yours. For we are both striving for a better city, and there’s much to do still.

INFLUENCE – #6 in the series
2013
Spray paint on mirror

Whether we like it or not, we have become products of this utopia/ dystopia, the long arms of the system have found their way to us and manifests itself in us- our behaviour is a reaction to the system. We dissociate ourselves from behaviour we do not condone, but yet we are one.

THE VANDAL – #7 in the series
2013
Spray paint on glass

Write your name on everything you see, for your presence exists in every building, every shopping mall, every park bench, every mrt station, every traffic light junction, the spaces we live in and the people who inhabit these streets.

GOODBYE – #8 in the series
2015
Dyed and painted eggshells on wood

It was not until the end of an era that we started to relate to and see beyond the idea of the Man. It was like seeing an old friend; we knew his loved ones, our hearts warmed up to stories told. We remembered, googled and learnt what he did, we wondered how we would fare after he left. It was a time we remembered he was human.

ONWARD – #9 in the series, the finale
2015 – running
Silkscreened t-shirts

Now I turn the mirror back unto you to recognise the things that you can do. The rest is up to you.

_______________

Many thanks to the Substation for this wonderful, out of this world opportunity to share my work through this first solo exhibition. Shout out to Edrington for the alcohol sponsorship and mini bar (Famous Grouse Whiskey, Snow Leopard Vodka, Brugal Rum) for making the night extra special for guests who came to the opening. Mad love for my hustler girls for manning my merch booth and to all my friends both old and new, I’m grateful for you guys. We may not meet as often but you coming to see the show is truly heartwarming, it was like plenty of reunions in one.

Last but not least, I’d really like to thank all of you who came to my first solo show, bought my work, continued the story in your own ways as well as said goodbye with me. For those who’ve been following my journey since day 1 from fiddling with design to those who supported me throughout the “sticker lady” days, thank you for believing in me guys. I’m sorry if I never got to chat long with you that day, please know I’m grateful you came and I got to share a part of my life with you.

With this solo I say goodbye to the past and move on to new adventures.

Love and light x
